Organizing Your Blood Draw Station: 3 Tips to Get You Started

Are you overwhelmed at the thought of de-cluttering your phlebotomy area? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Look at the big picture and think “Lean” to get you started, because 5S Lean practices  translate to safer and more efficient blood draws. And the time you save lets you put a greater focus on your patients.

1. Move Supplies Up & Out
Move your supplies out of drawers, off your countertops, and onto the wall. This simple change eliminates unnecessary steps required to open and close drawers or cabinets, as well as the need to hunt for supplies. With all your phlebotomy essentials visible, you know exactly where to find them.

2. Find the Right Organizers
There are many organizers to choose from for phlebotomy supplies: bins, tilt bins, tube dispensers, and more. So when you’re organizing, keep in mind the “sort” and “set in order” steps of 5S. Be sure to pick out the best option that will not only fit your space but fit your supplies.

Size
Oversized bins for small supplies means stock at the bottom will expire before it gets used. Make sure the bin fits the item.

Hopper Front vs Tilt-Out or Lidded Bins
Should the item be kept dust-free? If so, opt for tilt-out bins or bins with lids.

Multi vs Single Purpose
If you go through a lot of blood tubes in one day, you probably need a designated blood tube organizer. If your blood station is small, a multi-purpose organizer could be your best option to keep all your supplies at hand.

3. Stay Organized On-the-Go
Mobile blood draws don’t have to mean chaos and clutter. Invest in a durable phlebotomy cart that has ample space to hold your phlebotomy tray, a locking drawer, and movable accessories. No matter what model you choose, make sure every item has a place of its own to make staying organized easier.

Remember, it’s ok to start simple and make small changes. New organization ideas will start to flow once you make that first move. If you’d like to learn more about 5S Lean for Healthcare, request our 5S Lean for Healthcare magazine.
